Home of Major John Brahan, veteran of War of 1812, Major General, Alabama Militia, who owned 4,000 acres here. Built of bricks made on the place, marble mantels imported from Italy, boxwood hedge from London. Named for spring nearby.

Federals and Confederates quartered here at various times during the Civil War. Home of Brahan's son-in-law, Robert M. Patton, Governor of Alabama, 1865-1868.

April 22-23 - Sweetwater Living History Weekend

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live in Florence in 1860? Have you ever secretly wished you could? That opportunity can be yours on April 22nd and 23rd from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the "Sweetwater Living History Weekend."
Admission to the event will be free both days. The celebration will feature such events as an hourly reading of Alabama's  twentieth Governor Robert M. Patton's innaugural speech, a Maud Lindsay kindergarten re-enactment , Civil War campsites and many more living histories from the period.
Concessions will be available and different events will be planned for both days.

Watch for signs on the day of the event or call 256-710-4432 for more information.
All events will be postponed in case of rain.

You can step back in time at the historic landmark, Sweetwater Mansion. Sweetwater was established in 1828 by Major John Brahan, a veteran of the war of 1812, Alabama Militia
division. During the Civil War, Federal and Confederate troops encamped at Sweetwater. It later became the home of Brahan's son-in-law, Governor Robert Patton who served Alabama from 1865 until 1867.
During A Day At Sweetwater you can experience a civil war living history, see period clothing, quilting, enjoy period music and ride in an authentic Florence Wagon. There will be stories of the early years of Historic Florence, Sweetwater and the families that lived here.
The gate is open from 10 until 5 each day.
